The series The Hague Nights consists of five photographs taken in my hometown of The Hague in 2001. They were photographed with a medium-format Bronica camera on 6 × 6 cm black-and-white negative film and printed by hand on baryta paper in my own darkroom. The distinctive colour tone is the result of a special printing process.
The images depict an almost deserted city in the late evening. Here and there, a solitary figure makes their way through the streets. The stillness of the nocturnal surroundings evokes a sense of silence, distance and melancholy.
